چکیده

Non–planar driving mirrors have a complex geometry, which is defined by a base surface (the so– called calotte) and a planar contour. We describe and compare methods for generating NC tool–paths for a calotte cutting machine from these data. The methods are based on piecewise circular arcs and on polynomial spline curves. Distance bounds for the resulting tool paths, which are needed in order to check the accuracy, are also discussed. The paper concludes with suggestions for research on the use of Pythagorean hodograph curves in industrial NC tool path generation.

An Instantaneous Rigid Force Model For 3-Axis Ball-End Milling Of Sculptured Surfaces

An instantaneous rigid force model for prediction of cutting forces in ball-end milling of  sculptured surfaces is presented in this paper. A commercially available geometric engine is used to represent the cutting edge, cutter and updated part geometries. The cutter used in this work is an insert type ball-end mill. Intersecting an inclined plane with the cutter ball nose generates the cutting...

Non-Isoparametric Three Axis NC tool path generation for finish machining of sculptured surfaces

Sculptured surfaces are usually machined to their final shapes by a series of rough and finish passes. After each pass, excess material may be left at some concave or C1 discontinuous areas. Traditionally these undercut areas are “cleaned up” by repeatedly machining the whole surface with progressively smaller cutting tools. We present an algorithm for automatically identifying areas with exces...

Generating Multiaxis Tool Paths for Die and Mold Making with Evolutionary Algorithms

Defining tool paths for multiaxis milling is a difficult task that requires knowledge about the process and the behavior of the machine tool. Because of the high risks of multiaxis movements within a real machine, the resulting paths are safe but normally sub-optimal. This article introduces a new method to obtain tool paths, which are free of collisions and optimal in consideration, the machin...

Offsetting surface boundaries and 3-axis gouge-free surface machining

A key issue in the creation of error-free tool path for numerically controlled (NC) surface machining is gouging (over-cut> prevention. In the case of solid-based machining, where the creation of tool paths across several surfaces in a single pass is imperative, the major sources for gouging are the tangent discontinuity (C’ discontinuity) and the surface gap (Co discontinuity) occurred in the ...

Influence of Water Cooling on Orthogonal Cutting Process of Ti-6Al-4V Using Smooth-Particle Hydrodynamics Method

Temperature control during the cutting process with different parameters such as cutting velocity and applying water cooling is essential to decrease the cutting force, increase the life of the cutting tool and decrease the machined surface temperature of work-piece. In this research, the temperature of machined surface and the chip-tool interface in orthogonal cutting process of Ti-6Al-4V were...
